SIBU: The son of Second Finance Minister Datuk Seri Wong Soon Koh collapsed and passed away at 11.15pm on Sunday (Feb 10) at the family home.

A source told The Star Online on Monday (Feb 11) that Datuk Andrew Wong Kee Yew (pic), 42, most probably died of a stroke.

The source said Andrew suddenly collapsed at about 9.30pm Sunday.

Paramedic from a private medical centre rushed to their home but he passed away later.

According to another source, Chairman of Sibu Municipal Council Datuk Tiong Thai King said he had tried many times to call the family last night but failed.

Andrew, who is the only son of Wong, is married and has two children – a boy and a girl.

Those who learnt about Andrew’s sudden demise were shocked as he was last seen in a jovial mood welcoming Sarawak Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg at his Chinese New Year open house on Friday (Feb 8).

Andrew, who was a former deputy chairman of the Sibu Municipal Council, had contested the Sibu seat during GE14 but lost.

The incumbent candidate Oscar Ling won with an increased majority of 11,422 votes from just 2,841 votes previously.

In the only four-cornered fight in Sarawak, Ling garnered 33,811 votes to beat Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate Dato Andrew Wong, who polled 22,389 votes, Sarawak Peace Party’s (Peace) Jamie Tiew Yen Huong (377 votes) and State Reform Party’s (STAR) Simon Tiong (176 votes).

Andrew had also initiated the Sibu Development Plan. – The Star Online
